HOW SAMPLE MANAGER PRO COMPARES TO ADSR SAMPLE MANAGER, SONONYM, XO AND ATLAS

I build Sample Manager Pro, so this is not a neutral review. It is the comparison I would want to read before spending money: what each of these tools is for, where it beats mine, and where mine is different. If you only want the short version, skip to the table.

The one-line summary: ADSR Sample Manager, XO and Atlas live inside your DAW and are strongest when you are making beats from one-shots. Sononym is the best pure "find me a sound like this" browser. Sample Manager Pro is a standalone desktop app for the whole library, with analysis, metadata and editing tools you would otherwise need a separate audio editor for, plus two workspaces for making new sounds out of the samples you already own.

ADSR Sample Manager

$9.99 · macOS and Windows · standalone + VST / VST3 / AU / AAX

ADSR's is the one most people find first, because it is cheap ($9.99 at the time of writing, it used to be free) and it opens as a plug-in inside the DAW. It auto-tags your library, detects key, syncs loops to the project tempo, lets you audition from a MIDI keyboard, and drags straight onto a track. It also plugs into your ADSR account so the packs you bought there show up in the same browser.

Where it beats Pro. It runs inside the DAW and follows the project's key and tempo while you audition; Pro is a separate window you drag from. At $9.99 it costs a fraction of Pro, with no feature gate. If you buy sounds from ADSR, the store integration is convenient. It supports AAX for Pro Tools.

Where Pro is different. Pro runs on Linux as well as macOS and Windows. It analyses the audio itself (tempo, pitch, transients, loudness, spectral balance, clipping and DC offset), not just the filename, and lets you query that data like a database. Tags and metadata can be written back into the file as iXML/UCS, bext, ACID and ID3, so your work survives a change of software. It has a real non-destructive editor, UCS bulk rename, format conversion, and the Sound Designer and Generator for building new samples. There is no account and no store; nothing phones home after activation.

Sononym

$99 / €89 one-time · macOS, Windows and Linux · standalone

Sononym is the closest thing to Pro in spirit: a standalone, offline, cross-platform browser that listens to your samples. Its machine-learning categorisation is strong, and its similarity search is the headline feature. You can pick a sample, or record a sound through the mic, and it lists what sounds like it across your whole collection. It finds duplicates and near-duplicates, and it has been around long enough to be very stable.

Where it beats Pro. Similarity search is Sononym's entire reason to exist and it does it better than Pro, including the record-and-match trick, which Pro does not do at all. Its categorisation model has had years of tuning on electronic music. If all you want is a better way to find a sound, Sononym does that one job with less to learn.

Where Pro is different. Sononym deliberately does not edit audio. Pro's Library has a non-destructive editor (trim, fade, normalize, transient markers, extract every slice of a loop to one-shots), batch format conversion, a metadata editor that writes iXML/UCS, bext and ACID back to the file, and UCS bulk rename. Beyond the Library, the Sound Designer is a multi-track workstation with AU/VST3 effects and drawable automation, and the Generator renders up to 64 variations of a sound from a recipe. Pro also has a Free edition that never expires; Sononym offers a 30-day trial.

XO by XLN Audio

$149 list, often discounted · macOS and Windows · VST / AU / AAX + standalone

XO is a drum machine that happens to contain a very good browser. It scans your one-shots and lays them out in the "Space", a cloud organised by how they sound, so kicks cluster with kicks and you can wander toward brighter or darker ones. You load eight pads, sequence a beat with groove templates, and export audio or MIDI. It ships with over 8,000 one-shots and 240 beat presets.

Where it beats Pro. If your workflow is "find eight drum sounds and make a beat right now", XO is faster than anything, Pro included, because browsing and sequencing are the same screen. The Space is the most pleasant way I know to explore one-shots. It comes with a big factory library; Pro ships with none, it is for the samples you already have.

Where Pro is different. XO is for one-shots. It is not built to manage loops, vocals, foley, field recordings or long files, and it is not a library manager in the sense of tagging, renaming and maintaining a collection. Pro handles any sample, writes metadata to disk, runs on Linux, and does not try to be a drum machine. There is no sequencer in Pro.

Atlas 2 by Algonaut

$99 one-time · macOS, Windows and Linux (Ubuntu) · standalone + VST / VST3 / AU / AAX

Atlas 2 scans your drum samples, classifies them with machine listening, and places them on a zoomable 2D map. From the map you build kits of 8, 16 or 64 pads, sequence them in a step-sequencer-meets-piano-roll, add humanisation with the variation engine, and export MIDI or audio loops. It can embed samples into the DAW project so nothing goes missing later.

Where it beats Pro. Like XO, it is a complete beat-making instrument, and unlike XO it runs on Linux and supports AAX. The map is a great way to audition hundreds of kicks quickly. Embedding samples in the project solves a real problem, and Pro has no equivalent for it. If you want a drum sampler that organises your drums, Atlas 2 is a very good one.

Where Pro is different. Atlas is drum-centric by design. Pro is for the whole library, and it is a manager and editor rather than an instrument: structured search over real analysis data, metadata that is written to the file, UCS renaming, non-destructive editing, conversion and pack export. The Sound Designer and Generator are for designing and rendering new samples, not for playing them live.

WHO SHOULD NOT BUY PRO

  • You want a browser that lives inside the DAW and follows the project key and tempo. Get ADSR Sample Manager; it is $9.99.
  • You mostly make beats from one-shots and want browsing and sequencing in one instrument. XO or Atlas 2 will suit you better.
  • You only need similarity search and nothing else. Try Sononym's trial first.
  • You are not sure yet. Sample Manager Free is the same Library without the analysis and editing tools, it never expires, and it will tell you whether the approach fits how you work.
